On August 4, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. a Sault Ste. Marie Police Service cruiser was involved in a motor vehicle collision in the intersection of Pine Street and Wellington Street East. The collision involved a cruiser and another vehicle. No injuries have been reported at this time.

Shortly before the collision, officers were dispatched to the area after police received multiple complaints of a woman veering in and out of traffic on a bicycle. Complainants expressed their concern for her safety as well as the safety of others on the roadway. While attempting to stop the woman on the bicycle, the officer drove into the intersection where the collision took place.

A passerby stopped at the scene to offer help to those involved with the collision and at this time the woman who was on the bicycle got into the person’s vehicle and fled the scene. She later lost control of the vehicle in the area of Pine Street and MacDonald Avenue and a single vehicle collision ensued.

Officers responded and arrested 37-year-old Amanda Maynard. She is charged with theft of a motor vehicle. She is scheduled to appear in court on October 5, 2020.

The investigation into the collision involving the cruiser is ongoing.
