Supplied by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service…
During the Victoria Day long weekend, we responded to a call in Gros Cap as two people became stranded while hiking. Our Emergency Services Unit was called to assist in the rescue and were able to bring the two hikers to safety without injury.
Chief Hugh Stevenson says, “I want to recognize the immediate, professional and dedicated response to this emergency. Our officers spend many hours each year training to maintain and develop their skills. It is times like this where their commitment is rewarded as a potential tragedy was averted.”
We also want to remind the public to use caution while exploring hiking trails and parks in and around our community. Please, do not wander off of marked and approved trails, only hike on trails suitable to your skill level, make sure to let someone know where you are going and how long you anticipate you will be there and if you have a cell phone, ensure it is fully charged. Also, please remember the Gros Cap bluff area is private property and not part of the Voyageur Trail. Hiking in that area is trespassing.
