Civic Centre has been renamed the Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre.
As expected city council approved a recommendation of a committee of council to rename city hall and the resolution was approved unanimously last night.
Irwin served our community in many capacities including as a member of federal Parliament over two terms with the Liberals in the 80’s and 90’s, as a federal cabinet minister, Ambassador to Ireland, and Consul General of Canada in Boston.

City council has given the go ahead to go forward this summer with a Best for Kids Transit Pilot Project.
The initiative will provide free transit for children to access various recreation facilities including the Splash Pad, Pump Track, Manzo Pool, Greco Pool and Skateboard Park between June 27th and September 6th.
The number of users will be tracked to gauge the success of the initiative and and city staff will report back to council in early September.
The idea is to make the facilities more accessible to all families regardless of their financial circumstances.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie will gauge the interest in a proposed indoor mausoleum for our community.
Currently, the City has 19 outdoor mausoleum structures built in 14 phases with another to start construction in the spring with approved funding from the Cemetery Reserve.
Council gave its approval at last night’s meeting and sufficient interest would require 50% of the projected build and these individuals would be asked to provide a deposit to secure a space in the proposed indoor mausoleum.
City staff will track interest for approximately one year and will report back to council.
Based on similar sizes to our existing structures it would costs around three times the rate to construct an indoor structure—–roughly 3 to 3.5-million dollars compared to the one million dollar cost for an outdoor structure.
