Supplied by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service…
In recent months the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has received a number of complaints with regards to accessible parking spaces across the city. The Service has decided to launch an accessible parking enforcement blitz to more closely monitor how drivers are complying with the accessible parking by-law.
Officers will be monitoring parking lots across our community and issuing tickets to those who violate the by-law. Designated accessible parking spaces are designed for those with accessibility challenges and may feature more room between vehicles. This additional space is needed in some situations for people entering and exiting their vehicle; please keep these accessibility aisles clear.
All accessible parking spaces are intended for people who have been issued an accessible parking permit by the Province. It is the responsibility of the individual with the permit to ensure it is displayed properly. Displaying a permit incorrectly can also be grounds for a fine.
Parking in a designated space without a permit or not displaying an accessible permit can lead to a $300 fine. If a vehicle is found to be in violation of the accessible parking by-law, the vehicle may be towed at the owner’s expense.
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service asks all drivers in our community to please be courteous and respectful by not parking in an accessible parking space without an accessible parking permit.
The accessible parking enforcement blitz will begin on October 17, 2019 and run through the end of the month.
