City council was close to unanimous in throwing its support behind a city staff recommendation to put in place a 6-foot concrete sidewalk on the south side of 2nd Line between Great Northern Road and Old Garden River Road rather than an 8 to 9 foot asphalt path that would link up to the Hub Trail.
Last night’s vote was 11 to 1 with only ward 2 councillor Sandra Hollingsworth voting against the recommendation.
Part of the dicussion from a few of the council members focused on liability concerns as city staff advised that putting in place an asphalt path would be an invitation for cyclists of all ages to use the path in a high traffic area.
It’s a view that was expressed from a city hired transportation engineering specialist.
