City council provided unanimous support last night for a resolution calling on city staff to look into the merits of an appeal of a 1987 Ontario Labour Relations Board ruling which restricted the City to accepting construction bids from only two unions for infrastructure projects—-the two unions are the International Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and the Labourers International Union of North America.
Staff has been instructed to come back with a report that in part looks at the cost of making an application to the Board to achieve a non-construction employer designation.
The report would also outline actions required to change the designation and the timeframe involved.
The resolution was brought forward by ward 3 city councillor Matthew Shoemaker and Ward 4’s Rick Niro.
