CitySSMAn issue that was briefly discussed at the last City Council meeting is on the agenda again on Monday.  Council will be asked to authorize the Legal Department to prepare a draft submission for Mayor Provenzano to sign, supporting the position of Essar Steel Algoma and Tenaris.  It’s being done in response to a request from the two companies to support their call to deny an exemption for British Columbia regarding antidumping and countervailing duties for rebar.  Rebar is reinforcement steel, in the form of a steel bar or mesh of steel wires used as a tension device in reinforced concrete to strengthen and hold the concrete in tension.  The situation goes back to early 2015 when the Canadian International Trade Tribunal ruled that rebar imports from China, South Korea and Turkey would hurt Canadian  producers.  B-C and the Independent Contractors and Business Association are asking for the exemption because without one, the duties would hurt that province’s construction industry.
