(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON: June 20, 2018): Members of the Algoma University Board of Governors gathered on campus this evening for both their Annual General Meeting and the final regular meeting of the 2017-18 academic year.

Asima Vezina, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University, informed the board of continued signs of anticipated first-year enrolment increases for this coming fall. Recent data released by the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre indicates new secondary school confirmations are almost 25 per cent above 2017 levels.

The increase is attributed to a focussed recruitment strategy and the University’s revitalized marketing campaign, which kicked off in September 2017.

The largest increase in applications occurred in the Greater Toronto Area, one of the only regions in Ontario that continues to see sizeable growth in the number of secondary school students.

The University is also anticipating a 15 per cent increase in the number of first-year students from the Algoma region this fall.

“The Board of Governors is pleased with the progress being made to generate new enrolment,” said Mark Nogalo, Chair of the Board of Governors. “Our marketing and recruitment teams have worked tirelessly this past year to brand Algoma University as the first-choice destination for students within Sault Ste. Marie and elsewhere in the province. We look forward to welcoming these new students on campus in September.”

At the meeting, Nogalo was re-appointed for his second term as the Chair, while Dr. David Nanang, Director General at Natural Resources Canada’s Great Lakes Forestry Centre, was appointed Vice-Chair.

Both Pauline Danquah and Cheryl Jamieson were also renewed for a second term as the AUSU (Algoma University Students’ Union) and SASA (Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students’ Association) representatives, respectively.

Finishing six-year appointments are external member Paul Boniferro and Algoma University faculty representative Cathy Denomme. Long-term member and Algoma alumna Melanie Muncaster is also departing the board along with Michael Cachagee, Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association representative, and Pedro Antunes, Algoma Senate representative. New representatives will be announced as appointments are confirmed.

The next regular meeting of the Board of Governors is scheduled for September 20, 2018.
