news-essar steel algoma   City council has agreed to commit more funds to a Toronto-based law firm representing the city’s interests in the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act Proceedings for Essar Steel Algoma.  However, council last night would only commit to a smaller amount for now then what was requested by the City’s Solicitor Nuala Kenny.  City staff had recommended that council commit to a further 100-thousand dollars on top of an original commitment of 175-thousand dollars which has been spent.  Council would only agree to commit to up to 50-thousand dollars for now—–council rejected a motion put forward by Mayor Provenzano to limit the cap to just 25-thousand  dollars.  Council was told that by the end of the year, Essar Steel Algoma will owe the City around 21-million dollars in unpaid property taxes.
