See this Face? This is the face of a Type 2 Diabetic. Yes, it’s a subject very close to my heart and quite frankly , my whole life since diagnosis 25 years ago. As the pic may make me look like Art Garfunkel, there are no outward signs.

November is Diabetes Month.

I along with the likes of Toronto Star Darrell Sittler ( My fav. Player of all time) encourage you to go to a web site or two.
Go to www.taketwominutes.ca and answer some really basic questions which may show that you do or don’t have a risk of having or developing Type 2 Diabetes.
You can also visit Diabetes.ca for any answers to questions you may have.

I learned , ironically, through a community media diabetes awareness challenge with many local ‘talented’ folk in our business.
We had to take the challenge and carry around a Teddy of our Choice for a week, pretending that the Bear was Diabetic. At the end of the week, whomever followed the specific diet and gave the Bear regular insulin shots and monitored and recorded events all week.
So, we met the first night to collect and choose our Bears with a nurse and dietician and after chatting and laughing, we tested our glucose levels just for the heck of it.
That night changed my entire life with one prick of that needle as we set the drop of blood on the test strip into the machine.
The nurse asked around the room, ‘So what’s your number?’
One by one, they responded, ‘ 5.6, 5.4, 5.5 , 5.7’.
Then sue asked as I stared down sweating at what I was horrified to see.
“Jeff, what’s your number…I paused…I said it faintly under my breath…….15.5….
‘Let’s do it one more time…maybe it’s an error.. I checked again…’16.7′.
The nurse quietly took me aside…’ Maybe go see your doctor this week and get tested….’
I did and within two weeks I was formally diagnosed. “I was a new Type 2 Diabetic.
I showed no signs of sugar…in urine…fatigue..thrist..no history in my family… I biked all the time so of course, I drank lots of water.

I have lived and dealt with this deal I was handed and Thank God I took part in the Promotion back then 25 years ago..

I plead with you , go get tested…..
The staggering stats are 1 in 4 have Diabetes. soon to be 1 in 3 by 2020.

If you need answers, I can help you too. Call me…
