(Sault Ste. Marie, ON) The Sault Ste. Marie Downtown Development Initiative seeks to encourage private sector investment and revitalize the downtown core.
In 2014, City council approved a Downtown Community Improvement Plan, which introduced a series of financial incentives for property improvements.
The grants provide funding for interior renovations, structural upgrades, façade improvements, and professional design services. The program also offers tax rebates for large-scale investments.
To date, the grants have helped to facilitate significant investment in downtown properties, representing a positive step towards preserving the quality and character of our downtown buildings for the future. September 30 is the next intake date for applications.
“We are seeing momentum building in downtown revitalization and an increased understanding in the community that the health of the downtown determines the overall health of the city,” says Victoria Prouse, Project Coordinator for the Downtown Development Initiative. “Downtown property owners play a significant role in creating a welcoming environment and the grants help facilitate that process.”
